Kaleidescope:
The View from Within
This curatorial project seeks to challenge our perception of mass housing (toplu konut) and
question
its future. We would like to engage the phenomenon in reflection of the ongoing housing crisis and
the financialization of housing. Mass housing refers to tower-form multi-story apartment buildings
built using tunnel form construction and on a vast geographic and economic scale.
Mass housing is generally criticized from without. Its visual representations typically show how
bearing it is on its residents. Without redeeming mass housing projects from existing artistic and
scholarly criticism, we are interested in collectively observing: What is the view from within mass
housing developments? We want to invert this gaze that is dominant in visual representations of mass
housing. Our quest is more experiential than ethnographic: Alternative ways of “perceptual” knowing
can be more effective than cognitive rationalization.
